School Construction Project in Sansou, Haiti

In the spring of 2008, the Halton Catholic District School Board began a partnership with Solidarity Haiti, a non-governmental organization committed to supporting development projects in Haiti. Schools across the Halton Catholic District School Board began fundraising to support the construction of a school in Haiti. Each school was invited to make a contribution of $1000.00. Many schools exceeded this amount. In October 2009, the Halton Catholic District School Board began to provide funds for the construction of a six room school in Sansou, Haiti. The school is named l’Ecole Notre Dame d’Altagrace.

Funds raised by schools during the 2008-2009 school year were released to Solidarity Haiti in installments as the school construction project details were submitted to the Halton Catholic District School Board Helping Hands for Haiti Board of Directors. In July 2010, a final payment was paid to Solidarity Haiti. These funds were raised by the Walk with Jesus in May 2010 and an additional amount was raised solely by Mother Teresa School.

Update on School Construction

On Thursday, April 8,2010, we received correspondence from Benoit Begin, Director of Solidarity Haiti informing us that the construction of l’Ecole Notre Dame d’Altagrace was near completion. In this correspondence, Mr. Begin indicated the need to furnish the new school. The school would require twenty desks and benches for seven classrooms at a total cost of US $11,200.00. On April 26, 2010, the Halton Catholic DSB Helping Hands for Haiti Board of Directors supported continued fundraising to furnish l’Ecole Notre Dame d’Altagrace. The Halton Catholic District School Board was able to provide funds by the fundraising efforts of our schools through the Walk with Jesus. An additional $15,000.00 was raised. Mr. Begin requested that these extra funds be used for additional classrooms for l’Ecole Notre Dame De La Presentation in Merceron, Haiti. This school was built in 2007 through the tireless efforts of the students, staff and parents of Mother Teresa School. On September 1, 2010, the Halton Catholic DSB Helping Hands for Haiti Board of Directors supported the surplus $15,000.00 go towards the additional classrooms at l’Ecole Notre Dame de La Presentation.

The Halton Catholic District School Board has completed the Halton Helping Hands for Haiti School Construction Project established in 2008.

Invitation to the Inaugural Ceremony of l’Ecole Notre Dame d’Altagrace

In his correspondence, Mr. Begin indicated that Father Guy Casseus and the community of Sansou wish to proceed as soon as possible with an official inauguration ceremony. They wish to invite members of the Halton Catholic District School Board to travel to Haiti for this occasion.

Senior staff and the Halton CDSB Helping Hands for Haiti Board of Directors believe that the attendance of Board representatives at the inauguration ceremony will be a worthwhile conclusion of this project. Photos and a video journal on the trip to Haiti will be created to share with our school communities.

Members of the Halton Catholic District School Board are in the process of working out details for this trip when it is safe to travel to Haiti. As the Halton Catholic District School Board Helping Hands for Haiti school construction concludes, a visit to Haiti and participation in the official inaugural celebration of l’Ecole Notre Dame d’Altagrace will bring a nice conclusion to this project. The trip will be captured in a photographic/video journal in order to provide the Halton Catholic District School communities with an enriching pictorial account of their fundraising efforts and outreach to the children of Sansou, Haiti.
