At the April 5, 2011 Regular Meeting of the Halton Catholic District School Board, Alice Anne LeMay, Chair of the Board, was pleased to announce the election of three Student Trustees to the Board of Trustees for the 2011-2012 term.
EMMA HARPER, currently a Grade 11 student at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School (Burlington Student Trustee), EMILY BRADLEY, currently a Grade 11 student at Bishop P.F. Reding Catholic Secondary School (North Halton Student Trustee) and CLARISSE SCHNEIDER, currently a Grade 11 student at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School (Oakville Student Trustee), were elected as the 2011-2012 Student Trustees.
The election took place at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Burlington on April 4, 2011. Potential candidates responded to numerous questions from Student Senators, and after all the candidates were interviewed, the Student Senate voted by secret ballot. Board staff and current Student Trustees Christiane Peric and Jordan Cole acted as scrutineers of the process.
The Board of Trustees welcomed the three elected students to their important Trustee role, where they will represent the interests of more than 9,700 students attending Halton’s Catholic secondary schools.
Emma Harper is currently a Grade 11 Honour Roll student at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School. She has been a significant contributor to her school community through her involvement in various activities, including the Student Senate, Me to We and Longhorns for Life. She is also an active participant in Run for the Cure, and has donated her hair to the Angel Hair Foundation and Revlon’s Locks of Love. She is a member of the school’s Best Buddies Club and is actively involved in her parish.
Emily Bradley is currently a Grade 11 Honour Roll student at Bishop P.F. Reding Catholic Secondary School. She is actively involved in her school community and her parish. Some of her contributions have been her work with Development of Peace, Me to We, BR for Life, and the Students of Living Life Group. She has also been a member of the Milton Relay for Life committee. Emily is passionate about social issues and looks forward to actively representing her peers.
Clarisse Schneider is currently a Grade 11 Honour Roll student at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School. She has served as Student Trustee for the 2010-2011 school year and looks forward to continuing to represent all students and providing a role model for Catholic student leadership. Presently, Clarisse is a member of the Ontario Student Trustee’s Association, Minister’s Student Advisory Council, Student Council, Student Voice and her school’s Mock Trial Team. She actively contributes to her parish through the music ministry and in her role as a youth group leader.
The term of office for the three new Student Trustees is for the 2011-2012 school year. During their term of office, Student Trustees have the same rights as Trustees to participate at meetings of the Board and at meetings of Committees of the Board. The Student trustees have the right to exercise a nonbinding vote at Board Meetings and may be present at in-camera sessions of the Board.
The Education Quality Improvement Act, 1997 (formerly Bill 160) provided for the representation of the interests of pupils on school boards.
