HCDSB Secondary Students to Compete in New Athletic League

Beginning September, 2017, Halton Catholic secondary school sports teams will compete in a new athletic league. The Board has established the Halton Catholic Athletic Association (HCAA), a self-governing body that will oversee the extra-curricular (interschool) athletic programs, independent of the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association (HSSAA).

The HCAA will be comprised of each of the nine (9) secondary schools within the Halton Catholic District School Board. HCDSB interschool sports teams will continue to compete with HDSB interschool sports teams at the regional level. These changes will take effect for the 2017-2018 school year.

Quick Facts:

  • 3000+ student athletes across HCDSB schools compete in interschool sports teams each school year.
  • HCDSB has 167+ interschool sports teams each school year.
  • Catholic and public school boards in Niagara, Waterloo, and Hamilton compete in separate athletic associations.

Quotes:

“This decision has come about in response to the continued growth of the Board’s secondary schools, which now supports the viability of independent athletic programs.”
~ Anna Prkacin, Superintendent of Education

“We are grateful for the many positive relationships we have formed and the strong collaboration we have experienced over the past four decades, in partnership with the HSSAA.”
~ Diane Rabenda, Chair of the Board
