Please Support Catholic Schools: Declaring your Support for Catholic Education
Separate school support is a requirement for admission to the Halton Catholic District School Board. Roman Catholic parents, ratepayers and members of the Eastern Rite must declare their support for Catholic schools. At the secondary school level, if eligible, the parent/guardian shall designate separate school support and/or provide proof of separate school support. Your declaration ensures that the Province has a public record to show that our Catholic school system is strongly wanted and needed in Ontario. Start by checking your property tax bill or talk to your landlord. If you have moved recently, ensure that your child’s school is aware so that the appropriate changes are made and school support can be directed accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I support Catholic schools?
- Support of Catholic Values – Your declaration is essential in promoting Catholic values in the education of children.
- Voting – Ratepayers who assert themselves to be Catholic school board electors are able to vote in the election of Catholic school trustees.
- Trustee Representation – The number of Catholic school electors determines the number of trustees who can be elected to each school board to stand for the interests of parents and other ratepayers.
- Population Projections – Your declaration helps school boards determine their enrollment projections, which affects government funding for building and maintaining schools.

I was a Catholic school supporter at my previous address. Why has my designation changed?
When you move, your Catholic school support designation does not follow you. As soon as a change is made to your address, your school support designation defaults to Public support. Every time you move, please contact the HCDSB Assessment Department or Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to ensure that your school support is directed to the Catholic Board.
We don’t have children attending school. Do we need to direct our school support?
Yes, School Support direction should be made even if you do not have children attending school.
Can I have one child in a Catholic elementary school and one child in a Public elementary school?
Yes, but before you can register your child in one of our Catholic schools, you will need permission from the Director of Education, and you will be asked to complete a form directing your tax support to the Catholic Board.
Will my taxes increase if I direct my support to Catholic schools?
No. A change to the direction of school support does not result in any additional cost to you as a taxpayer or affect your property in any way.
Property Assessment Notice:
The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) mails out Property Assessment Notices to every property owner in Ontario. Check your school support designation and if the school support does not indicate Catholic: Contact your child’s school and ask for an Application for Direction of School Support form. OR Contact the Halton Catholic District School Board Assessment Department:
Additional Information on Directing School Support:
Although tenants do not receive a Property Assessment Notice, they may still direct school support for the area of the home/apartment they occupy.
Note: The Direction of School Support Form is the main document which will direct your support. However, in addition to this form, the Separate School Support Lease Form must be completed when one of the owners/tenants is Non-Catholic. At least one owner/tenant must be Roman Catholic in order to direct their support.
