St. Matthew Elementary School

Our School

St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School is an outstanding learning facility, which harvests an environment of harmony and interaction amongst the teachers, staff, students and parents. St. Matthew is also a French Immersion school. Education is the key focus of all stakeholders. Through its vast focus on Catholicity, Curriculum, Home-School Communication, Safety and Community Building, the students of St. Matthew are taught the skills they require to grow into productive adults. This sets the stage for their leading a fulfilled life.

The educational experience is not limited to just the classroom. Through the many out-reach programs our children learn to incorporate their catholicity outside the school setting. We promote peer assistance initiatives (children helping children). One such example of these altruistic undertakings is the annual collection of school supplies by our student body that were shipped out to remotely located schools in Tanzania and Madagascar. Our children learned the lesson of the difference that they made in the lives and education of their peers in another part of the world. Children helping children is an idea that displays the power and results of cooperation and generosity.

Other such campaigns are our annual food and clothing drives for the Good Shepard and St. Vincent DePaul. There is a strong sense of community, friendship and caring within the St. Matthew School Community.

St. Matthew School is an inviting place for parents and children alike. Volunteers are always needed and this helps make our school a very friendly place to be. Parent Partners is a committee set up with parents such as you who may be able to find an hour or two several times a month to volunteer in helping make the school a great experience for our children.  Let's not forget volunteerism is what weaves the true colour, pride and character of our community with whom you share common interests. In one word "PARTICIPATION"!  When you participate, you feel you've taken advantage of the moment.  The same applies to school; and your children will feel a stronger bond to their school.  So plan to participate as a "St. Matthew Parent", please call the school at (905) 847-0088 and ask how.

Another good volunteer opportunity at St. Matthew School is to be involved with the Catholic School Council. Catholic School Councils are legally constituted bodies of elected and appointed representatives of the local school community established for the purposes of developing, encouraging and promoting activities which will enhance the quality of school programs and improve the levels of student achievement. Five School Council Committees were formed for this school year. If you would like more information on the school council and their committees, please call the school at (905) 847-0088.

Student Success Programs

"Learning to 18" has been used by the Ontario Government as a strategy in fulfilling its mandate in making the school experience a positive one for all students- an experience leading to achievement that will help all students become productive members of society.

Our Catholic perspective has always been that student are life-long learners and so it is with this in mind that teachers program for every student based on the Board and the School Improvement plans, daily work results, benchmark, report card and EQAO data.  This information, in turn, is used to inform instruction through the construction of appropriate pathways and differentiated instruction within these pathways to match every student's learning style.

Teachers are always vigilant in ensuring that every child is achieving to potential and advocating for their students in ensuring they receive the required supports for success.

Curriculum Focus

St. Matthew School has an exemplary reputation as a Christ-centered, high academic achieving school. The students excel in the classroom, on the sports fields and in the Arts. We host the extended French program for grades 5-8 and offer a wide range of extracurricular activities. The Parent Partners program offers an excellent opportunity for parents to get involved in the school while the students reap the wide range of benefits that the volunteers add to school life.

Experienced, highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers provide the students with a solid academic program based on the Ontario Curriculum. School board resource personnel provide additional supports and materials, keeping the Halton Catholic District School Board on the cutting edge of instructional strategies and resources.

The parents, staff and parish work together to foster faith-based instruction and values, educating the whole child on all levels: emotionally, socially and intellectually. Father Mark Gatto, pastor of St. Matthew Church works closely with the school to provide spiritual guidance, sacramental preparation, as well as regular masses and celebrations to help guide our students on their spiritual journey andpersonal development.

Environmental Focus

St. Matthew Eco team members work relentlessly to make St. Matthew school a cleaner, greener place. Our team is over 50 members strong and consists of students from  grades 3-8. Our members help with composting and recycling of materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. They work to keep you informed on the many exciting events taking place throughout the school year, including our Halton Waste Calendar contest in October, our Tupperware Tuesdays and fundraising towards trees, plant and green initiatives. Last year we added a beautiful outdoor classroom to our school yard. Our goal is to once again be certified by the Ministry of Ontario as an Eco School with Gold standings for our 5th consecutive year. Please look for our Think Recycle box in the library and consider donating old cell phones and ink cartridges in exchange for money that will help with our environmental initiatives.

Parent Community Involvement

Parent  Partners are the largest committee of School Council with over 125 volunteers, providing a variety of services and events that allow our school community to thrive.  Studies show that the most effective way to improve student life and performance is through parental involvement in the greater school community.  Our activities build upon the close sense of community already achieved in our faith based, smaller school environment. In the interest of safety, all volunteers require a completed police check.
