Our students and staff are dedicated to working with home and Church to achieve personal 'bests'. The Halton Catholic District School Board is very proud of its committed and caring students and staff, who bear daily witness to the teachings of Jesus and truly exemplify the Board's motto - "Sharing the Spirit".

We are pleased to celebrate the successes of our students and staff: (for past successes, please visit the archive).

Lights for Literacy Reading ChallengeLights for Literacy Reading Challenge
At the beginning of December, Annissa McClure, Grade 1 teacher at Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School, challenged the school's youngest students to read a collective total of 3,000 books in the month of December. A big challenge during such a busy month, but the JK, SK, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students at Mother Teresa School demostrated their love of reading and surpassed the goal! As each child read, they filled out "lights of literacy" that proudly lined the school's hallways. On January 7, their hard work was celebrated with a PJ and movie party in the gym. The students watched "The Muppets Christmas Carol" based upon a literary classic by Charles Dickens, as they sipped Tim Horton's hot chocolate and enjoyed chocolate chip cookies.
Acton StudentActon Student's Art Featured on Region's 2010 Calendar
Congratulations to Riane Masse, a Grade 8 student at St. Joseph Catholic School in Acton, who had her artwork, depicting the theme of the three R's, selected to be featured on the cover of the 2010 calendar for Halton Hills. Halton Region began delivering its recycling and garbage collection calendars to households last week with the cover art again supplied by local elementary school students. A creative three R's design by a child from each municipality was selected from over 1,000 entries to be on the cover of the 2010 calendar for their respective municipality. Residents can also view the calendars online at www.halton.ca/waste.

Students Shine at Regional Debate Tournament at Christ the King Catholic Secondary SchoolStudents Shine at Regional Debate Tournament at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School
On November 27, 2009, 8 schools from both Halton Catholic and Public school boards came together at Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown for a regional debate tournament. Excitement filled the air as debaters from St. Ignatius of Loyola and Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary Schools, and White Oaks, Abbey Park, Robert Bateman, Lester B. Pearson, Georgetown District and Iroquois Ridge High Schools entered the Christ the King Catholic Secondary School Library to get prepared to debate the resolution: "Be it resolved that smokers should not receive OHIP coverage." The schools were welcomed by student hostesses, Jayme Crane, Anna Adricoupoulos, Katie Veloso, and Carly Kucherenko. During the school's fourth period, all the debaters, coaches and volunteers gathered in the library for an impromptu fun debate on the topic: "Be it resolved that Santa Claus should be arrested for break and enter." This proved to be one of the hilarious highlights of the day. Halton Hills Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Board Rosanna Palmieri and School Principal David DeSantis were on hand to congratulate the students and hand out the awards. It was a very tight competition with the overall school winner being Abbey Park Secondary School. A special thank you to all the volunteer judges, timers and moderators who donated their time and energy to make this tournament such a success, and to Mary-Ann Campanelli and Marguerite DiFilippo for organizing the event. Congratulations to all the participants!
The St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School Environmental Club Receives a Green Apple GrantThe St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School Environmental Club Receives a Green Apple Grant
Congratulations to the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Environmental Club on receiving a $1,000 Green Apple Grant sponsored by Metro. The grants are aimed at elementary and secondary schools in Ontario that are involved in projects that benefit the environment and the greater good of the community. The St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School students applied for the grant in order to create a project that would educate other students about the benefits of solar power and renewable energy. The students of the Environmental Club will be inviting others to join them as they build their own working solar panel. The solar panel will be part of a larger project that includes the development of a website outlining the project. The solar panel itself will be a part of a physical display that outlines the importance of renewable energy.
