 | Top Local Student Athletes Honoured at B'Nai Brith Sports Celebrity Dinner Among the 2008/09 Hamilton and Halton high school athletes honoured at the annual B'Nai Brith Sports Celebrity Dinner hosted on February 1, 2010 at the Hamilton Convention Centre were: Lauren Iantomasi and Jodi Hewins (both Assumption Catholic Secondary School graduates) and Tom Paron (currently in Grade 12 at Assumption Catholic Secondary School); Julien John and Chantelle Robbertse (both in Grade 12 at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School); and Keith Lagace and Jamie Ruttle (both in Grade 12 at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School).
|  | Lights for Literacy Reading Challenge At the beginning of December, Annissa McClure, Grade 1 teacher at Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School, challenged the school's youngest students to read a collective total of 3,000 books in the month of December. A big challenge during such a busy month, but the JK, SK, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students at Mother Teresa School demostrated their love of reading and surpassed the goal! As each child read, they filled out "lights of literacy" that proudly lined the school's hallways. On January 7, their hard work was celebrated with a PJ and movie party in the gym. The students watched "The Muppets Christmas Carol" based upon a literary classic by Charles Dickens, as they sipped Tim Horton's hot chocolate and enjoyed chocolate chip cookies.
|  | Acton Student's Art Featured on Region's 2010 Calendar Congratulations to Riane Masse, a Grade 8 student at St. Joseph Catholic School in Acton, who had her artwork, depicting the theme of the three R's, selected to be featured on the cover of the 2010 calendar for Halton Hills. Halton Region began delivering its recycling and garbage collection calendars to households last week with the cover art again supplied by local elementary school students. A creative three R's design by a child from each municipality was selected from over 1,000 entries to be on the cover of the 2010 calendar for their respective municipality. Residents can also view the calendars online at www.halton.ca/waste. |  | Fred Scione Memorial Catholic Cup Congratulations to all teams and participants in this year's tournament! |  | Oakville Trustee Alice Anne LeMay Recognized by the Canadian Government for Her Thirty Years of Service Congratulations to Oakville Trustee Alice Anne LeMay, who was recently recognized by the Government of Canada and Terence Young, Member of Parliament, Oakville, on her thirty years of dedicated service as a trustee and chair of the Halton Catholic District School Board. |  | The Halton Police Toys for Tots Holiday Campaign Receives Toys from Ascension Catholic Elementary School in Burlington This year, the Ascension Catholic Elementary School Community has collected new unwrapped toys for the Halton Regional Police Service's Toys For Tots campaign, as part of its annual Christmas social outreach initiative. "Support for community programs, like Toys for Tots, is a very visible and tangible expression of our school's Catholic faith in action," explains Michael Chiarelli, Ascension Catholic Elementary School Principal. "Not only do those in need benefit, but our students also learn about the importance of giving and living out our Gospel values, in a very meaningful way." The toys were presented to Inspector Dave Gwilliams on behalf of the Halton Regional Police Service's Toys for Tots campaign on December 17, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. On hand to make the presentation were Ascension Catholic Elementary School Principal Michael Chiarelli, Halton Catholic District School Board Superintendent of Education Mary Tessari and several student ambassadors. In addition, The Most Reverend Anthony F. Tonnos, Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton and Reverend Raymond Modeski, Pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington and the Dean of Halton, were pleased to participate in the presentation and commended the school community and all those involved for their work in giving to those less fortunate, especially during the Christmas season. |  | Making a Difference by Sharing the Spirit of Christmas Miss Emma Genovese, a first year Kindergarten teacher at St. James School and Holy Family, began her own food drive with her Senior Kindergarten class at St. James School. Together Miss Genovese and her SK's collected 879 items with the help of their neighbourhood, school community, friends and family. Just in time for the holidays, Miss Genovese wanted to teach her young students that one person can make a difference in the lives of others and Christmas is a time for giving. |  | Students Shine at Regional Debate Tournament at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School On November 27, 2009, 8 schools from both Halton Catholic and Public school boards came together at Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown for a regional debate tournament. Excitement filled the air as debaters from St. Ignatius of Loyola and Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary Schools, and White Oaks, Abbey Park, Robert Bateman, Lester B. Pearson, Georgetown District and Iroquois Ridge High Schools entered the Christ the King Catholic Secondary School Library to get prepared to debate the resolution: "Be it resolved that smokers should not receive OHIP coverage." The schools were welcomed by student hostesses, Jayme Crane, Anna Adricoupoulos, Katie Veloso, and Carly Kucherenko. During the school's fourth period, all the debaters, coaches and volunteers gathered in the library for an impromptu fun debate on the topic: "Be it resolved that Santa Claus should be arrested for break and enter." This proved to be one of the hilarious highlights of the day. Halton Hills Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Board Rosanna Palmieri and School Principal David DeSantis were on hand to congratulate the students and hand out the awards. It was a very tight competition with the overall school winner being Abbey Park Secondary School. A special thank you to all the volunteer judges, timers and moderators who donated their time and energy to make this tournament such a success, and to Mary-Ann Campanelli and Marguerite DiFilippo for organizing the event. |  | The St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School Environmental Club Receives a Green Apple Grant Congratulations to the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Environmental Club on receiving a $1,000 Green Apple Grant sponsored by Metro. The grants are aimed at elementary and secondary schools in Ontario that are involved in projects that benefit the environment and the greater good of the community. The St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School students applied for the grant in order to create a project that would educate other students about the benefits of solar power and renewable energy. The students of the Environmental Club will be inviting others to join them as they build their own working solar panel. The solar panel will be part of a larger project that includes the development of a website outlining the project. The solar panel itself will be a part of a physical display that outlines the importance of renewable energy. |  | Loyola Student Calendars Raise Funds for SCAW This year, the sales of the creative St. Ignatius of Loyola 2010 Student Calendar, which showcases the designs of talented visual arts students under the direction of teacher Liz Tkalec, raised $770 for SCAW - Sleeping Children Around The World. |  | System Elementary Volleyball Championships 2009 Congratulations to the Holy Rosary School Girls Volleyball Team in Burlington and the St. Matthew Boys Volleyball Team in Oakville, who are both the System Elementary Volleyball Champions for 2009! |  | Notre Dame Wins Golden Horseshoe Bowl Title CONGRATULATIONS to the Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Fighting Irish Senior Football team who won the 2009 Golden Horseshoe Bowl title at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on November 25 with a 33-10 victory over the Lakeshore Catholic Gators of Port Colborne. In addition, Notre Dame was recognized at the game with a second trophy which identifies the team as the Number 1 Football team in Ontario as voted by representatives from the OFSSA committee and football coaches around the province. |  | Notre Dame Senior Football Team Advances To Golden Horseshoe Bowl Title The Green Machine keeps on winning! The Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Fighting Irish Senior Football team will meet the Lakeshore Catholic Gators of Port Colborne for the Golden Horseshoe Bowl title at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on November 25 as a result of their 36-14 victory over the Sir Allan MacNab Lions of Hamilton on November 19. |  | Notre Dame Senior Football Team GHAC Champions The Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School Fighting Irish Senior Football team and coaches were crowned this year's GHAC (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference) champions on November 12 when they defeated the Hamilton Catholic champion Cardinal Newman Cardinals 27-20 in an exciting contest at Cardinal Newman. |  | Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School Students Raise Money for Cancer Research Congratulations to the students from JK to Grade 8 at Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School in Oakville, who participated in the Terry Fox Walk-a-thon on September 25, 2009 to raise money for cancer research. Their enthusiastic support and strong Christian commitment to help others resulted in a donation of over $11,448 to this worthy cause! |  | HCDSB Staff and Students Recognized At Chapter 391 Council for Exceptional Children Annual Awards Night 2009 Congratulations to Judi Kochanka (right side of photo), Itinerant Special Education Resource Teacher with our Board for being selected to receive the 2009 Secondary Teacher of the Year Award from the Chapter 391 Council for Exceptional Children. Judi was recognized for her lifelong passion for children with special needs and her efforts in bringing Structured Teaching strategies to the Halton Catholic District School Board. This teaching approach has now been adopted in both of our elementary panel and secondary panel Lifeskill classes.
As well, Ann Drudge (left side of photo), an Educational Assistant at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, was awarded the 2009 Secondary Educational Assistant of the Year award by the Chapter in recognition of her 20 year career in Special Education, working with a wide variety of students with special needs. Ann is retiring from Notre Dame Secondary School at the end of June, 2009.
In addition, two students of our Board - George Dhanjal (centre of photo) and Elia Milen were recognized by Chapter 391 as Yes I Can recipients. George spoke eloquently upon receiving his award and the audience certainly agreed that he was well deserving of recognition in the area of Self Advocacy.

Student Awards, CEC Chapter 391 Awards, held in Mississauga. |  | Board's School Soccer Teams Excel Congratulations to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of Burlington for defeating the Georgetown Rebels, becoming Halton junior girls’ soccer champions. The Fighting Irish won after a close game thanks to a 4-3 shootout win. Congratulations also goes to the Corpus Christi Longhorns of Burlington for beating the Milton District Mustangs 4-1, claiming a Halton high school senior boys' AA soccer championship. Congratulations to Christ the King of Georgetown for beating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of Burlington 2-1, winning the boys' AAAA Halton senior soccer final and to the Loyola Hawks of Oakville, who beat the Bishop Reding Royals 2-1 in the semifinals of the Halton senior girls' soccer championship. In addition, congratulations to the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders senior girls' soccer team, who beat the Milton District Mustangs 1-0 in the AA semifinals and to the Loyola Hawks junior boys' soccer team, who beat the Bishop Redng Royals 2-0 in a quarterfinals match. Also, the Bishop Reding Royals defeated Hamilton's St. Mary Crusaders 4-2, to win the GHAC championship. The senior boys also beat the Assumption Crusaders 6-1 in the Halton semifinals. The Bishop Reding Royals boys' soccer team went on to beat the Nelson Lords 3-2 to win the AAA regional soccer championship. |  | Notre Dame Boys Win Halton High School Baseball Championship Congratulations to the Fighting Irish boys baseball team of Notre Dame for winning the Halton high school baseball championship, held at Nelson Park on June 11, 2009. 2009 O.E.C.T.A. Elementary Educator of the Year - Carmela Picchi, Our Lady of Peace School, Oakville, for her outstanding dedication to Catholic education in Halton;
O.E.C.T.A. Elementary Halton Unit Life Membership Award - Brian Fichaud, retired Superintendent of Education of our Board, for outstanding service to Catholic education in Halton and the aims of education in the province of Ontario;
O.E.C.T.A. Elementary Administrator of the Year Award for 2009 - Martin Rokowski, Principal at Canadian Martyrs School, Burlington, for outstanding service to the teaching profession as an administrator of a Catholic Elementary School in the Region of Halton;
O.E.C.T.A. Elementary President's Award for 2009 - John Fuca, for his outstanding service to Catholic education in Halton; and
O.E.C.T.A. Elementary Honourary Membership Award for 2009 - Ryan Dick, Information Technology Services Department, for outstanding service to Catholic elementary teachers in Halton Region.
|  | Assumption Student Honoured Congratulations to Neshonda Lowe of Assumption Catholic Secondary School in Burlington, who was honoured at a special awards celebration held at the Halton Regional Centre in Oakville. Neshonda was honoured for her fourth place/$400 win at the 2009 Halton Region RBC Business Plan Competition. |  | Bishop Reding Girls' Slo-Pitch Team Win Regional Championship Congratulations to the Bishop Reding Royals girls' slo-pitch team, and their coach Linda Thissen, for winning the Halton Regional Slo-pitch Championship. The Royals claimed a 9-1 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. |  | OECTA Young Authors Awards/Prix Jeunesse Congratulations to Jeanneda Saulnier and Jill Mercer and their students, who won in this year's province-wide OECTA Young Authors Awards/Prix Jeunese. All winners this year were in the French categories. In the Grade 5/6 French Immersion category, the winners are from St. Joseph, Oakville: Cecilia McLean and Vanessa Silano. In the Grade 7/8 Core French category, the winner is from St.Andrew: Carly Fiset. |  | St. Gabriel Student Claims Gold at the Eastern Canadian Gymnastics Championships Congratulations to Denise Guertin, who won a gold-medal on the uneven parallel bars at the Eastern Canadian Championships, which took place in St. John's, Newfoundland. With a score of 13.250, Denise won by a wide margin of victory on her favourite event. Denise has been a member of the Burlington Gymnastics Club for 12 years, and had worked very hard to earn the last available Ontario spot at the Eastern Canadian Championships. Denise was also the only gymnast of 17 in her division to finish in the top six in each event. |  | St. Gabriel Student Awarded 2009 Intense Watersports Program Scholarship Congratulations to Joey Michael, St. Gabriel School student, who was recently awarded the 2009 Intense Watersports Program Scholarship, by Winning Techniques.
Joey was selected as a scholarship receipient for a number of reasons, including his support for school activities and events, and his sense of responsibility to give back to his community through volunteer work and fundraising. Most recently, Joey raised $10,426.00 for McMaster Children's Hospital, Pediatric Oncology, and donated his platinum blonde long hair to Angel Hair for Kids. He is active in his parish, and was also selected to be a "Guardian" - a mentor for the younger children in his school. For additional details, please click here. |  | Loyola Hawks Win the 2009 Jr. Tier 2 Rugby Championship Congratulations to the Loyola Hawks and coach Luke Van Koeverden, who beat the Aldershot Lions 12-8 during an intense playoff game of rugby on Friday, May 29 at Sherwood Forest Park in Oakville. Although the Hawks entered the game as the underdogs, they surprised their competition and prevailed victorious. |  | St. Joseph School Student Runs Ottawa Half-Marathon Congratulations to Thomas Graham-Binkowski, Grade 6 student at St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Acton, who recently competed in the Ottawa Half-Marathon along with his mother and a friend. The boys met their goal of finishing the 21.1 km race in two and a half hours, completing the course in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds. Approximately 10,000 runners took part in the Half-Marathon. Thomas began training for the race in February. |  | Notre Dame Students Win Bronze Medals at Canada Wide Science Fair Congratulations to Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School students Sophia Coulter English and partner Gillian Walczak who received awards at the Canada Wide Science Fair, which took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba the week of May 9-17, 2009. Sophia and Gillian received bronze Engineering medals, which were accompanied by an Honourable Mention for Environmental Innovation for their project, "We're Still Not Plastic Bags: Perfecting the Perfect Plastic." The girls were two of 475 finalists chosen from approximately 25,000 Grade 7-12 students who competed in regional fairs across the country. |  | Nine Halton Catholic District School Board Students among Winners of the 2009 Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation Excellence Awards Nine students from our Board are among the winners of the 2009 Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation Excellence Awards. The award recognizes university- and college-bound students for their achievements in leadership, innovation, academic performance, and community service. These students join a community of over 18,000 excellence award alumni who are making their mark in Canada and abroad. |  | Oakville Trustee Pauline Houlahan Elected to the OCSTA Board of Directors On May 13, 2009 the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association (OCSTA) announced its new Board of Directors for 2009-2010. Congratulations are extended to Halton Catholic District School Board Oakville Trustee Pauline Houlahan, who will represent the Halton, Hamilton Wentworth and Niagara Catholic regions, along with Kathy Burtnik, Trustee with the Niagara Catholic District School Board. The regional directors were elected during the Association's 79th Annual General Meeting. For more information please click here. |  | Bishop Reding Senior Boys Soccer Team Wins Spectator Cup Congratualtions to the Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School Senior Boys Soccer Team for their victory in the 2009 Hamilton Spectator Cup. The team, coached by Brent Fraser, Gary Demedeiros and Adrian Flynn, defeated Burlington's Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School Longhorns 3-0 in the final game. The school has been blessed this year with a talented group of dedicated athletes who represent BR well both on and off the field.
|  | Curriculum Consultant Cesare DiDonato Awarded the George King Award of Excellence The growth and development of the Ontario Cooperative Education Association (OCEA) is the result of individuals who have worked diligently and enthusiastically to promote Cooperative Education and other forms of Experiential Learning. Many Cooperative Education educators (and community partners) have contributed their talents and energies to promote the concept of experiential learning. In 1991, OCEA's Award of Excellence was renamed the George King Award of Excellence to honour the man many believed embodied the very foundation of this award - quality, excellence, integrity. The George King Award of Excellence is the highest, most prestigious, award that OCEA can bestow.
This year's recipient of the George King Award of Excellence is our very own Cesare Di Donato, Curriculum Consultant for Guidance and Co-operative Education. Cesare has distinguished himself as an individual who has made outstanding local, regional and provincial contributions to Cooperative Education and Experiential Learning over a number of years. Congratulations to Cesare on this outstanding achievement!
|  | Director of Education Awarded Niagara University's Educational Leader of the Year Award Our Director of Education, Michael W. Pautler, was presented with the Educational Leader of the Year Award at a special recognition ceremony held on April 30, 2009 at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, New York. Niagara University College of Education recognizes educational leaders, counselors, teachers and community members from Western New York and Ontario for their accomplishments in teaching, practice, and scholarship. This year, Michael W. Pautler was honoured as the Educational Leader of the Year in recognition of the significant contributions he has made to the profession of education throughout his career, spanning over 29 years as an educator, and 17 years of diverse administrative leadership experience. Other criteria for this award include: a commitment to Niagara University's mission; ongoing professional learning and reflective practice; and experience in demonstrating both leadership and practice.
|  | Milton Trustee Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Ordination At its May 5, 2009 Regular Board Meeting, the Halton Catholic District School Board took pride in honouring Rev. David Wilhelm, Milton Trustee on the Board and Pastor of Holy Rosary Church, Milton, who is celebrating 25 years of priesthood on May 12 this year with a presentation of a Marian stole. Rev. Wilhelm will celebrate this milestone anniversary at his Holy Rosary Parish with a Mass of Thanksgiving and reception on May 12. Father Dave was part of the first ordination to the priesthood celebrated by Bishop Tonnos on May 12, 1984. He has served in a variety of roles throughout the Hamilton Diocese since then and has been pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Milton from 2001 to 2009. He began his service with the Halton Catholic District School Board as Milton Trustee in 2003. Effective June 24, 2009, Rev. Wilhelm will be transferred to Blessed Sacrament Church in Burford, Ontario and will resign as a trustee with our Board.
|  | Grade 12 Assumption Secondary School Student Named Winner of Catholic Essay Scholarship Award Grade 12 Assumption Catholic Secondary School student John Michael Schneider has recently been named a winner of the 2009 Fireside Catholic Publishing Essay Scholarship. John Michael is one of five Catholic high school seniors that have been awarded the $1,000 scholarship. There were 387 entrants and 35 finalists from across Canada and the United States in the contest. John Michael wishes to pursue a career in vocal performance of both sacred and secular music, and hopes to write a book someday. By sponsoring the Fireside Scholarship, Fireside Bible Publishers seeks to recognize students who have embraced their religious education. |  | Notre Dame Secondary School Awarded ecoHero Prize Notre Dame Secondary School has won a $1,000 prize through the Burlington Mall's ecoHero program. The school is using the money to revitalize an area where portable classrooms were recently removed. In addition, mall staff spent two hours on Earth Day helping the students clean up their school yard. The mall's program challenged local high schools to develop community clean-up ideas to commemorate Earth Day, give reasons for helping out their school and identify a school program that would benefit from the $1,000 prize. Notre Dame Secondary School was selected as the recipient of the prize, since they have been supporting a number of eco-friendly initiatives and have a established a "green" culture at the school. |  | Notre Dame Secondary School Raises Money for "One Small Step" Through a dodgeball tournament, Notre Dame Secondary School has raised $1,400 for One Small Step - a charitable organization that advocates for individuals and families affected by Prader-Willi Syndrome. Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that results in short stature, obesity, small hands and feet and a constant need to eat. The tournament was held on April 15, 2009 in recognition of a school staff member's nephew, who has been diagnosed with the disorder. |  | Bishop Reding Graduate To Be Ordained The Halton Catholic District School Board and especially the staff and students of Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School wish to congratulate Brendan McGrath on his upcoming ordination into the priesthood. Brendan graduated from Bishop Reding in 1998. Staff who knew Brendan proudly recall him as a student who was unselfish, hard-working, and caring. His Christian morals, respect for himself and others, charity and humility were all character traits of Brendan that enabled him to receive the Catholic Student Award for 1998. This award recognizes the outstanding commitment of secondary school students throughout the province to Catholic Education. It is not very often that a school or school board feels privileged to know that one of their graduates has taken this wonderful step in serving the Lord. The Ordination of Brendan McGrath to the ministerial priesthood of the Holy Catholic Church through the imposition of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit by Bishop Anthony Tonnos, Diocese of Hamilton, will take place on May 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Hamilton.
|  | Notre Dame Excellence Award Notre Dame's Excellence Award program has been established to recognize both former faculty members and students of Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. Recipients selected for the Notre Dame Excellence Award have demonstrated leadership and outstanding achievements in various endeavours. Their contributions bring honour to the Notre Dame community. In 2008, the recipients of the Notre Dame Excellence Award were Mr. Ed Mizzi (faculty member) and Ms. Ryan Kuch (student). Their names are prominently displayed on the Notre Dame Excellence Award plaque located in the main foyer of the school. Nominations for this year's Notre Dame Excellence Award are now being accepted. In March, 2009, Matt won a gold medal at the Newmarket Regional meet and has improved his 500m/1000m time. Earlier this season, he achieved the fastest 500m time in the history of the Milton Speed Skating Club. His time of 57.68 seconds placed him among a select group of only three skaters at the club who have broken the one-minute mark. On March 25, 2009, Matt was presented with 'Skater of the Year' for his club by the head coach of the Manitoba Provincial Team, Todd Landon, as shown in the accompanying photo. In addition, Matt taped with YTV Crunch, a popular Saturday morning television program for younger children, a segment about speed skating as part of a series of sports that they are going to run ahead of the Olympics. Alyssa was one of 35 students across Canada, awarded a prize in the Everyone Jump Educational Challenge - a partnership between OPHEA (Ontario Physical and Health Education Association) and Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. to educate Grade 5 students across the country about how to prevent type 2 diabetes through a healthy diet and regular physical activity. More than 16,000 students across Canada registered to take part in the contest. The St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Raiders Senior Boys Hockey team and coaches Chris Alderson and Bryon Hickey defeated Norwood Secondary School 2-1 in the 2009 OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) AA bronze medal hockey game in Peterborough. This is the first OFSAA medal in hockey for the school. Josh Ruys led the tournament in scoring with 22 points in 7 games. |  | Mike's Miracles - A Lesson In Giving Congratulations to the St. Elizabeth Seton School Community in Burlington, who raised over $1,400 last year for "Mike's Miracles". In addition, the school has raised $500 this year through a cookie fundraiser, with plans to hold a fundraising BBQ in June, 2009. The school became involved in raising money for "Mike's Miracles" through the volunteer experience of their JK Teacher Cindy Lamont. Cindy met Mike Vandendool while volunteering on the pediatric oncology floor at McMaster Children's Hospital. Mike was a 12 year old cancer patient, who had a dream to raise money for a "New Release" movie room at the hospital. Mike was so appreciative of the kindness of others while on his own cancer journey that he wanted to give back to the community. His goal was to make a difference in the lives of sick children and their families, especially those who were on a cancer journey of their own. Although the students at St. Elizabeth Seton School had never met Mike, they came to know him through Cindy and the many posters that have been displayed throughout the school promoting "Mike's Miracles". Sadly, Mike lost his battle with cancer on April 25, 2008, but had expressed his wish for his work to be carried on and the St. Elizabeth Seton School Community has been committed to honouring Mike and continuing his work. JK Teacher Cindy Lamont also had an article titled, A Lesson In Giving, published through Imagine Canada - a national program to promote public and corporate giving, volunteering and support to the community. The money raised at the school through "Mike's Miracles" will be used to help organizations such as McMaster Children's Hospital, McMaster "Child Life", Camp Trillium, Help a Child Smile, Rankin Cancer Run, Give Kids the World, Ronald McDonald House and others.

There she will compete in the 12-and-under girls under-45 kilograms continuous fighting division. |  | Burlington U16 Girls Win Soccer Bronze Julie Maheu, a Holy Trinity Secondary School student, helped the Burlington Sting under-16 girls soccer team earn bronze at the national soccer championships in Nova Scotia in October. Julie, a midfielder, scored three goals in the tournament for the Sting, who won bronze with a 3-0 victory over the Edmonton West Raiders. |  | Bishop Reding Student Jumps To Grand Champion Maddie Nelson, a Grade 11 Bishop Reding student, and her horse, Razmataz, claimed Grand Champion honours in this year's Ontario Trillium Child/Adult Jumper circuit. The pair won two out of the three classes to reign supreme, beating out 45 other entries, many with a lot more experience. Maddie trains and works weekends at the Vanbrook Equestrian Farm. |  | 'Aiming For The Top' Provincial Scholarships Awarded This year, we are pleased to announce that 111 of our students won Queen Elizabeth II Aiming For The Top Scholarships. The Queen Elizabeth II Aiming For The Top Scholarship Program is a program of the Ontario Government that rewards students who graduate with top marks at their high school, and who plan to continue their studies at an Ontario college or university. Students who maintain an 80 per cent average at the post-secondary level can receive these scholarships, which are worth up to a maximum of $3,500 per year, for up to four years in total.

She was actually among the top 10 young women in Canada! |  | Notre Dame Boys Golf Team Wins Halton & GHAC Titles The Notre Dame Secondary School Fighting Irish Boys Golf team of Evan Koritko, Kris Kowalchuk, John Krpan, Matt MacDonald and Steve Smith, won this year's Halton title and the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference tournament at Glen Abbey Golf Course to qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Boys championship in St. Thomas.
Candice Schwartz, of Christ the King Secondary School, took the Halton Girls golf title, shooting a two-round total of 169, with Michaela DiMarcantonio, of Corpus Christi Secondary School, four strokes back in second place. Kyle earned a bronze medal at the national championships in the junior elite cruiser finals held in Abbotsford, B.C. in May. He also won the 2008 overall title for his respective division in the provincial points series at the Ontario Cup championships at Saugeen Shores in September, taking both the cruiser & 20 and junior elite classes. |  | Notre Dame Students Earn Gold At Provincial Skeet-shooting The Cianciosi brothers, Nick Jr. and Gabe, both students at Notre Dame Secondary School, out shot the skeet-shooting competition at the Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa. Nick Jr. won a gold medal in the individual segment, hitting 196 out of 200 targets and claimed a silver medal alongside Andrew Carry of Ottawa in the two-man team class with a combined team score of 179. Gabe turned in a personal best of 90 out of 100 targets in the team event with Kingston's Patrick Groenewegen, finishing 185 out of 200 in their gauge class to win gold. |  | Provincial U-16 Girls Beach Volleyball Champion Julia Hamer, a Notre Dame Secondary School student, teamed with Taylor Simons of Stoney Creek to win this year's provincial U-16 girls beach volleyball championship in Toronto. They went undefeated, winning every set. |  | 2008 May Court Club of Oakville Scholarships The May Court Club of Oakville, a non-profit charity, presented 29 Oavkille high school students with scholarships totaling $39,730 in recognition of their commitment to their school and community.
