Assumption 2007 Graduate Selected as a Finalist in CNN'S Heroes Awards

The Halton Catholic District School Board is very proud to announce that Kayla Cornale, a 2007 graduate of Assumption Catholic Secondary School in Burlington, who is currently pursuing her post-secondary studies in Science at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, has been selected as one of the three finalists in the Young Wonders category of the 2007 CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute. Kayla was nominated for this award by her former teacher and mentor, Kathy Perino at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School, in recognition of Kayla's academic and extra-curricular achievements, as well as her work and research in Sounds Into Syllables - a teaching tool that she invented for individuals with autism that links language to sounds to improve their communications. The CNN Heroes initiative recognizes ordinary people for accomplishing extraordinary things. There are six categories with three finalists in each. During this first year of the initiative, CNN received more than 7,000 nominations from viewers in 80 countries. The Award Honouree in each category will be announced during a two hour CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute on December 6, 2007 at 9:00 p.m., hosted by CNN's Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The gala show which will provide a profile about each of the 18 finalists, who will be in attendance, will air live globally on CNN/U.S., CNN International and CNN en Espanol on Thursday, December 6 at 9:00 p.m.
