The Halton Catholic District School Board’s Gifted Education model is intended to meet the learning needs of identified exceptional learners within a Catholic Community.  Gifted students demonstrate very superior intellectual abilities and potential which requires differentiated programming of a complexity, depth, and breadth beyond the regular classroom alone.  However, the implementation of the Individual Education Plan within the regular classroom is a critical component of a gifted child’s education.  The IEP allows for a differentiated curriculum addressing the individual needs, abilities, and interests of the gifted student.

The responsibility for the total development of the gifted child is shared by the Itinerant SERT for Gifted, the school-based SERT, and the regular classroom teacher, along with the family and various support personnel.

The Itinerant SERT conducts small group sessions to provide extension to the regular classroom program. Sessions will run for 110 minutes once every three weeks. The school SERT will continue to support gifted programming in conjunction with the classroom teacher during the weeks that the I-SERT is not scheduled to be in the school.

A schedule of Board Level Events will also be planned and facilitated by the I-SERT. Students are congregated regularly with their gifted peers from around the Board to participate in large group events which provide a cross-curricular approach to learning.
