GO Conference (Junior)

Converging with other gifted students from Southwestern Ontario, students will have an opportunity to attend a one day conference at the Nipissing campus in Brantford, Ontario. You will choose two workshops from a variety of selections designed with you in mind and presented by the teacher pre-service candidates in partnership with the Inter-Board Network for Gifted Education. The day will be filled with fun-filled challenges and the opportunity to connect with other gifted students from across the region.

The Ontario Science Centre (Junior & Intermediate)

Junior

While viewing the IMAX film “The Human Body,” investigate how the human body’s systems and organs work together as you follow a tomato on its journey to the biological blender of the stomach. Travel through the bloodstream and into the pumping chamber of the heart. Embark on a voyage down the ear canal and into the caverns of the middle ear to discover how your brain makes sense of the sounds around you. The most advanced scanning electron microscopes, thermal imaging, medical computer graphics and stunning real-life images give a remarkable glimpse of the amazing things that take place beneath the skin to keep us ticking.

In the school program “Diversity of the Microworld,” focus on the diversity in structure and function of animal and plant cells with a hands-on microscopy workshop. Explore the roles microorganisms play in our everyday lives, from producing foods and medicines, to helping digestion and causing illness.

Intermediate

The IMAX film “The Mystery of the Nile” will take students on a breathtaking cinematic adventure on an expedition down the world’s greatest and most deadly river, The Blue Nile. Follow the exploits of a team of explorers facing seemingly insurmountable challenges – rapids, crocodiles, hippos, bandits, malaria, sand storms and the fierce desert sun. Journey with the crew on their four month expedition along all 5,216 km of the river as they become the first in history to complete a full descent of the Blue Nile from source to sea.

In the school program “Environmental Solutions,” determine where is the best water source and how can you access it? Engage in the design process and confront the complexities of selecting and supplying a community with a clean water supply. From problem definition and data collection, to the building of a device to solve the challenge, you will take part in a scientific inquiry and design model.

Academic Quadrathalon (Intermediate)

Based at the site of each feeder high school, grade seven and eight students come together in teams of four to challenge their mental flexibility and critical and creative thinking skills. This popular event, facilitated by secondary students, will include four areas of competition: trivia, math and problem-solving, an engineering challenge, and a scavenger hunt through the school. Intermediate students will have the unique opportunity to experience the excitement of the high school setting as they work along side their gifted peers.
