In January, Mlle. Green’s Grade 5/6 French Immersion class from St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School were joined by Member of Parliament Michael Chong to discuss the role of the government, and domestic and global issues as part of their Social Studies course.

In French, Michael discussed his role in parliament, and answered a variety of questions from students. He also spoke to the importance of bilingualism in Canada and about our need to combat climate change.

“My hope is that by relating the Social Studies curriculum to current topics and real-world examples, I inspire my students to love learning and to find something that they are passionate about,” said teacher, Christina Green.

“A meaningful discussion with a local Member of Parliament adds a new perspective for each student and allows them each to make their own unique connection with what they are learning.”

After their virtual visit with Michael, some students expressed an interest in politics. Others felt inspired to volunteer and participate in local environmental initiatives.

Kudos to Mlle. Green for encouraging our students to become self-directed, lifelong learners! And thank you to Michael Chong for sharing your knowledge with our students!
