At the Special Board Meeting held on April 26, 2021, the Board of Trustees adopted the following motion:
A Statement from the Chair
In our Catholic schools, we welcome and value all students and celebrate diversity within our communities. We believe that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, and we teach our students to honour the dignity in each person by treating one another with care, compassion and respect.
We are committed to nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments in each of our schools, and while our staff work hard to create and maintain welcoming spaces, we know that there is always more we can do as a system to ensure that all students experience a true sense of belonging.
We received a great deal of feedback on the proposed motion to recognize Pride Month from members of our community, and we know that some will be disappointed with the outcome of our deliberation. The actions prescribed in the motion adopted by the Board of Trustees outline the first steps in an ongoing commitment to supporting the 2SLGBTQ+ members in our HCDSB community.
This three-pronged approach – mandatory staff training and education, raising community awareness, and ensuring resources and supports are in place for students in each of our schools – provides a long-term strategy to creating and maintaining safe and inclusive learning environments in each of our schools where all students and staff can feel welcomed and accepted.
