Potential French Immersion Expansion and Boundary Changes

Questions?

If you have any questions about the potential French Immersion Program expansion, and how it may impact your family, please send us an email: FrenchExpansion@hcdsb.org.

At the January 21st Board Meeting, Trustees considered a motion to expand the French Immersion Program beginning in the 2020-21 school year. Trustees deferred making a decision until the February 18, 2020 Board Meeting, in order to allow time for the Board to share this information with elementary parents who may be impacted by this expansion.

The option to expand the French Immersion program would require system-wide boundary reviews next year, which may impact many HCDSB elementary students and families.

Background - About the French Immersion Program at HCDSB

The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) currently offers an optional French Immersion Program that begins in Grade 1.

The French Immersion Program is offered in each municipality at four schools:

  • Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School in BURLINGTON
  • St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Elementary School in HALTON HILLS
  • St. Scholastica Catholic Elementary School in MILTON
  • St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in OAKVILLE

Student enrolment into the French Immersion Program in Grade 1 is currently limited to two (2) classes per municipality.

Exploring Expansion Options for the French Immersion Program

  • At the Regular Board Meeting held on November 21, 2019, the Board of Trustees asked staff to provide a plan to address the expansion of the French Immersion Program across HCDSB.
  • At the Policy Committee Meeting held on December 10, 2019, staff presented four options for consideration - view the options and report here.
  • At the January 21st Board Meeting, Trustees considered a motion to proceed with the option to expand the French Immersion Program for the 2020-21 school year.

How Would the Potential Expansion of the French Immersion Program Affect Your Child and Family?

Student enrolment into the French Immersion Program in Grade 1 is currently limited to two (2) classes per designated school. The option for expansion that is being considered would add up to two (2) more Grade 1 French Immersion classes per designated school. While this is possible for the 2020-21 school year, a long-term solution to the expansion of the French Immersion Program will be needed.

This would mean:

  • Boundary reviews that will involve all elementary schools in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville.
  • Possible changes to the current elementary school boundaries for all students (not only students registered in the French Immersion Program).
  • Specialized programs may be moved to other schools.
