On Friday, February 7, 2014, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School welcomed Babarinde Williams to celebrate Black History Month. Mr. Williams’ interactive presentation, “I Am You” was both powerful and entertaining. Through story-telling, songs, chants, and drumming, students from Grades 3 to 8 learned about African culture and traditions, as well as the underlying values of kindness, love and humanity.

Following the assembly, students in Grades 6 to 8 participated in African drumming workshops throughout the day in smaller groups. Students were able to learn about and experience hand drumming on authentic African drums and percussion instruments, while building upon the lessons they learned earlier in the morning assembly.

The Black History Month event with Babarinde Williams was a fantastic experience for all, leaving Sacred Heart of Jesus staff and students with a greater appreciation of African culture, and the positive values associated with their many traditions.
