On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, the Honourable Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education visited St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Oakville, to make an announcement regarding Ontario's Renewed Math Strategy.
Minister Hunter visited Mrs. Asselin's Grade 6 class to speak one-on-one with students about their math studies, and TVO's online resource known as mPower. Students were able to showcase their learning and teach Minister Hunter how they use 21st Century gamification in the classroom.
After the classroom visit, Chair of the Board, Diane Rabenda; Director of Education, Paula Dawson; Superintendents of Education; Trustees; staff; and honourable guests gathered in the school's library to listen to Minister Hunter speak about the province's commitment to embedding math across the curriculum.
The visit concluded with Minister Hunter speaking with Board staff about the Halton Catholic District School Board's math strategy and our commitment to excellence.
"As part of our renewed math strategy, which I had the opportunity to announce in September, elementary schools are now protecting an average of 60 minutes of math, each and every day. And this is from Grades 1-8. That's in addition to schools being encouraged to continue to embed math across the curriculum." - The Honourable Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education
"At the Halton Catholic District School Board, it is our goal to ensure that all of our students achieve success, and are able to fully realize their God-given potential. We are grateful for the support of the Ministry of Education and TVO, and for their collaboration and commitment to student achievement."
- Diane Rabenda, Chair of the Halton Catholic District School Board
