On Wednesday, May 31st, the Halton Catholic District School Board recognized 42 volunteer families at the annual Roots of Empathy Baby Celebration.

The event included a performance by the Jean Vanier choir, music teacher, chaplain, and guest speakers, including a volunteer parent who shared her experience of observing children in the class showing acts of empathy towards one another.

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that raises the social and emotional understanding amongst children, and increases their overall actions of empathy.

A parent and baby visit a classroom once a month throughout the school year, providing opportunities for children to observe a baby's development and learn about the baby's emotions, as well as become more aware of their own feelings and the feelings of others. A trained instructor visits the classroom before and after the family visits to reinforce the teachings of the visit.

Special thanks are extended to Daniela Attardo, Principal of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Elementary School, for hosting the 5th Annual Roots of Empathy Baby Celebration.
