St. Thomas Aquinas Student Named as Recipient of 2017 Schulich Leader Scholarship!

Andres Lombo of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School has been named a 'Schulich Leader' in the 2017 scholarship program!

The Schulich Leader scholarship recognizes those who have shown academic success - all sharing a common interest in Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology (S.T.E.M.) programs. The 'Leaders' have also shown their influence in volunteer-based programs, as well as their innovative approach with organizations dedicated to the future of Engineering and Technology.

The Schulich scholarships are awarded to 50 qualified students across Canada. There are 25 scholarships given to those who have chosen a degree in Engineering, like Andres, and 25 scholarships awarded to students who have chosen a degree in Science, Technology, and Math.

A leader and innovator at his school, Andres began the student-led organization, 'Voyage Science', an interactive S.T.E.M. activities-based program that has travelled to elementary schools across the HCDSB to engage young minds.

Andres has also competed in numerous engineering fairs - competing as part of Canada's team at an International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Los Angeles in May, 2017.  He qualified for the international competition after placing third 'Best in Fair' at the 2017 Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF).

In his spare time, Andres is a team leader at the Conquest Catholic Youth Boys Club, leading groups of Grades 4-6 students in sports, interactive games and faith-building activities that impact the community. He is also an Executive Member of his school's social justice club that supports charities through fundraising activities.

Beginning his post-secondary education in the Fall, Andres will be entering the Engineering Science Program at the University of Toronto, majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The HCDSB wishes to congratulate Andres and his fellow nominees in their academic achievements! We wish Andres a very successful future in his chosen field of study!
