On Thursday, May 25, 2017, 62 Grade 5 students from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Elementary School participated in an experiential learning opportunity at Ikea's Burlington store. The event took place to help students fulfill the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education's Creating Pathways to Success document.

The students participated in four workshops throughout the day. In keeping with our Catholic social teachings of Stewardship, the day focused on the theme of sustainability. Activities throughout the day included a scavenger hunt around the store for sustainable Ikea products, and groups presenting innovative ways to care for and preserve the environment.

During each of the workshops, students learned about many career opportunities, and the steps needed to achieve these opportunities. Students were then given the chance to express their dreams for the future, and used a comic strip to depict their own imagined career path. They included why they chose that career pathway, and how they imagined they could accomplish their goals.

The students enjoyed a fun-filled, educational day! Visiting Ikea helped to reiterate the value of experiential learning as a means of exposing our students to tangible career opportunities.

The Student Success Team extends its gratitude to both Ikea and the St. Joan of Arc staff and students for their efforts and enthusiasm!
