Holy Week is Upon Us!

Holy Week is the week leading up to Easter, which begins on Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019, and ends on Holy Saturday, April 20, 2019.

After over a year of breaking open the message of our Theological Theme, we enter this Holy Week with a deeper appreciation for the account of Peter’s tri-fold denial of his relationship with Jesus, which we heard in the Palm Sunday Gospel. That Peter could survive this apparent betrayal to be given such great responsibility to carry on Jesus’ work is a message of hope for all of us that no-one is beyond the Lord’s love and forgiveness.

In this, the holiest week of our Church Year, we should also be challenged by the message of “Renewing the Promise”, our Bishops’ Pastoral Letter for Catholic Education, to revisit our commitment to accompany one another and make real the Body of Christ in our Catholic schools.

May our prayer and reflection this week help us to be truly penitent for the times in which we have not lived up to our Lord’s call to ‘come and follow me’ and to find hope and joy in our Lord’s incalculable and unconditional love for us. Perhaps we, like Simon of Cyrene, can help those around us who are carrying heavy crosses by walking with them and helping to lighten their load.

Jesus asks us, “Do you love me? Will you walk with me on this road to Calvary? Will you spend an hour with me? Will you feed my lambs?” May you experience this Holy Week as an encounter with our living and loving Lord and a new opportunity to respond, “Yes, Lord, I love you.”.
