50th Anniversary Celebrations at HCDSB!

This school year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB).

In celebration of HCDSB's 50th Anniversary, a number of events and activities are planned to celebrate our journey in faith as a Catholic education community!

Quick Facts:

  • HCDSB currently serves more than 36,000 students across 45 elementary schools, 9 secondary schools and 3 continuing education sites.
  • Our HCDSB roots trace back to 1856, when Fr. Morgan Rex-Ryan founded St. Mary School, the first Catholic elementary school in Oakville.
  • In 1969, provincial legislation mandated the consolidation of school boards across Ontario. The municipal school boards of Burlington, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville amalgamated to become the Halton County Roman Catholic Separate School Board.
  • In 1974, a regional government arrived in Halton, changing Halton County to the Regional Municipality of Halton. The ‘county’ was dropped from our school board’s name, leaving Halton Roman Catholic Separate School Board.
  • At the Board’s 25th Anniversary in 1994, there were nearly 20,000 students enrolled in Kindergarten to OAC (Grade 13).
  • In 1997, the ‘Fewer School Boards Act’ came into effect, and English-language and French-language schools were separated into two school boards:

  • 1. Halton Roman Catholic Separate School Board became the English-language Separate District School Board in Halton;
    2. Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique Centre-Sud was established as the French-language Catholic school board.

  • In 1998, the Board was renamed to the Halton Catholic District School Board.

50th Anniversary Plans:

The 50th Anniversary was officially launched at the Regular Board Meeting on November 19th, with the unveiling of the Pilgrimage of the Cross. The cross will journey from school to school, with a starting point at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School in Georgetown, and will continue its journey until Catholic Education Week, 2021.

Details of the 50th Anniversary events and activities planned are available on the Board's website. Students, staff, parents and members of our community are invited to share their 50th Anniversary highlights on Twitter, using the hashtag: #HCDSB50.

Quote:

"We are honoured to commemorate this significant milestone, as we celebrate 50 years of excellence in Catholic education in Halton. Our story is steeped in rich tradition, filled with special memories that have been shaped by the thousands of students, parents, staff, trustees, parish and community members who have shared in our journey. We are proud of all that we have accomplished as a school district so far, and look forward to celebrating with our HCDSB community.”
