HCDSB Staff Present Math Research Findings at Western University

On Thursday, April 25, 2019, staff from HCDSB presented math research findings at Faculty Research Partners Day (FRPD) at Western University.

FRPD is a one-day conference open to local school board members, professors at Western's Faculty of Education, and their research partners. The theme of the 2019 conference was "Theory-Practice Connections: Collaboration for Classroom Insights". The purpose of the conference was to promote future faculty-school board research collaborations.

The study, “Understanding Educator Experiences Implementing Screeners to Assess
Students’ Early Math Skills: A Research-Practice Collaboration”,
was implemented by HCDSB Research Development Services, Curriculum and Special Education departments. The study was presented by Jenn McDonald, Jacquie Mickle and Daniel Ansari.

The goal of the study was to identify students needing further support in mathematics, and to support Kindergarten educators in providing focused mathematical learning opportunities.

In partnership with the Numerical Cognition Lab, HCDSB used screening tools in eight pilot schools to assess current math strategies.

Kindergarten teachers found the screening tools easy to implement. Educators also found that the tools help determine changes to teaching practices to better support students, and help enhance math skills.

Thank you to Jenn McDonald and Jacquie Mickle for sharing your findings, and for helping enhance student learning!
