Advent ~ A Season of Waiting in Joyful Hope!
Wait for the Lord, whose day is near!

What Is Advent?

For Catholics, Advent is a time of hope and preparation, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and await his second coming. This year, Advent begins on Sunday, December 1, and ends on Tuesday, December 24, 2019.

An Advent Message From Our System Chaplain & Faith Formation Lead
With Advent coming so quickly on the heels of Black Friday, it is easy for us to get caught up in the busyness of Christmas shopping and preparation. As we see all the excitement of the secular Christmas activity, it is such a gift to be able to take a step back and appreciate the message of John the Baptist – Prepare the way of the Lord – which we find in the readings of December 8th, the Second Sunday of Advent.

This is a perfect time to reinstitute family and personal faith practices - which may at times get lost in the demands of our lives - to pray together around an Advent wreath on the dining room table, to reflect on the messages of a faith-based Advent calendar, to re-read favourite storybooks of the birth of the Christ Child, to have an old-fashioned carol singalong.

As we plan to celebrate with family and friends, we also have the opportunity to give to those less fortunate – of our time, talent or treasure – remembering as St Teresa of Avila told us that Christ has no other body to do his work than ours. May we deliberately set aside time to rekindle the flames of our faith, to reach out in warmth to all those around us, especially those whom we often do not notice. And may our celebration of Christmas be the real one which happens with the coming of Christ into our hearts.     ~ Gillian Federico, System Chaplain & Faith Formation Lead
