Clubs, activities, sport teams, bands and extra-curriculars will be permitted during the 2021-2022 school year, with modifications.


Clubs, activities, sport teams, bands and extra-curriculars are permitted. Cohorts may interact outdoors with physical distancing encouraged, and indoors with masking and appropriate physical distancing. Extracurricular activities, such as clubs, may be conducted virtually where appropriate.

Direction in sections on protective strategies and specific academic programs and requirements apply to all extra-curricular activities.

Inter-school Sports Activities 

Measures for inter-school sport activities will follow the requirements in the health and physical education section for schools

  • High and low contact activities are permitted outdoors without masking.
  • High and low contact activities are permitted indoors. 
  • Masking is encouraged for indoor sports where they can be worn safely based on the activity for both high-contact and low-contact activities.
  • Students will practice hand hygiene before and after activities.
  • Windows will be opened when feasible to support increased ventilation during physical activity.
  • For contact tracing purposes, coaches will maintain attendance of all student and adult/coach participants.  
  • Proof of COVID-19 self-screening is required for all students participating in high contact sports. 
  • Remote students participating in any extra-curricular activities are required to follow Visitor Protocol.
  • Community Coaches will follow Visitor protocols. 
  • Anyone accessing the school building as a visitor is required to follow the Visitor Protocol.
  • Staff/Coaches must maintain PPE requirements indoors.
  • Staff/Coaches can remove PPE when outdoors but must have appropriate PPE available where physical distancing cannot be maintained.
  • No spectators (students, staff, families and volunteers) permitted for indoor sports, until further notice.

Outdoor Sports Spectator Protocol

Beginning the week of October 4, 2021, spectators will be permitted on HCDSB secondary school grounds during outdoor sports games. 

In accordance with current health and safety measures, the following Outdoor Sports Spectator Protocol will be in place:  

  1. Stands may be filled to 75% of the bleacher capacity.  
  2. All spectators will be required to confirm they have successfully completed the Ontario COVID-19 school screening tool. For contact tracing purposes, spectators will also be asked to provide a phone number where they can be reached. This must be done prior to entering the stands by using a smartphone to access a QR code to the online form that will be posted at the gate. Hardcopy forms will also be available on site for those who do not have access to a smart phone. 
  3. On game days, school gates will open 30 minutes before the start of the game to reduce congregating. 
  4. Schools will be counting the number of spectators that enter through the gate to ensure that they do not go over the 75% capacity, as noted above. 
  5. Spectators are encouraged to wear masks when physical distancing of 2 meters cannot be maintained. 

NOTE:  No spectators are permitted for indoor sports, until further notice.

Community Use of Schools

Community use of schools is permitted provided activities align with public health guidance and comply with provincial requirements under the Reopening Ontario Act

The following guidelines must be followed for all community use permits within HCDSB facilities:

  • Community use of school users are required to self-screen and to wear a mask while on school premises. The mask may be removed only while participating in permitted sports.
    • High and low contact activities are permitted outdoors without masking.
    • High and low contact activities are permitted indoors. Masking is encouraged for indoor sports where they can be worn safely based on the activity.
  • User groups will ensure that visitor lists and contact information are maintained and readily available to be provided to public health for contact tracing purposes in accordance with all applicable legislation, including the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Capacity limits for the permitted space will be calculated based on the Provincial guidance at the date/time of the permit.
  • Evening community use of schools bookings will be limited to 1 user group per school per evening. 
  • Multiple user group bookings will be permitted on weekends with a 30-minute gap in between bookings for cleaning and disinfection.
